The NC Envirothon is a fun, hands-on, natural science academic event that challenges and engages students to think critically about the natural world and their role in it. The Envirothon combines an in-class curriculum with outdoor training to help students learn and to experience more about Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soils & Land Use, Wildlife and Current Environmental Issues.
The Envirothon program is an effective educational tool, capable of supplementing environmental education both inside and outside the classroom. Led by a volunteer advisor, teams usually meet from late autumn until spring. Team members work together to develop their knowledge of ecology and natural resource concepts and to practice their environmental problem-solving skills in preparation for Envirothon competitions.
The Area Envirothons are the qualifying events for the NC Envirothon. Contact your district employees at the beginning of the school year to inform them of your team(s) and request resource study material. Wake District personnel hold many resource study sessions prior to the Area 4 Envirothon competition.
The top scoring 7 teams from the Middle School and High School levels of each Area competition go on to compete for championships at the State Envirothon. The NC High School level winning team goes on to compete with teams from the US and Canada at the Canon North American Envirothon.
The Area 4 Evirothon was held on March 13, 2009 at Firestone Nature Center, Wilson. Seventy teams participated. Counties in Area 4 are Durham, Edgecombe, Franklin, Granville, Halifax, Johnston, Nash, Vance, Wake, Warren and Wilson.
