For two of Wake District’s Envirothon teams, Earth Day weekend rewarded a year’s worth of environmental studies with big wins at the 2012 North Carolina Envirothon. The Envirothon is known as the “natural challenge” where five-member teams compete in five natural resource areas: soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, and current environmental issues.

Enloe High’s Sub-Chronic Exposure team beams with delight as they are proclaimed the NC Envirothon’s state champions for 2012. The team will represent NC at the international 2012 Canon Envirothon in PA this summer, vying for college scholarships that total $107,000 in all. The Envirothon is North America’s largest high school environmental education competition. In NC, the Envirothon is coordinated by NC Division of Soil & Water Conservation, the state’s 96 soil & water districts, and the NC Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts. All Wake County teams are sponsored and coached by Wake Soil & Water Conservation District.

The Hornets from Holly Ridge Middle School in Holly Springs receives 1st Place and $100 for their Envirothon Service Learning Project at the 2012 NC Envirothon. The Hornets are sponsored by Wake Soil & Water Conservation District. From left, front row: Hornet team members Emily Clemente, Cameron Odom, Matthew Flanagan, and Taylor Randall.

Hello Volunteers across Wake County!

Here’s our 2012 Spring Big Sweep schedule for Wake County!

Please roll up your sleeves to help roll out tons of unwanted and potentially harmful litter from our creeks, streams, lakes & wetlands!

To volunteer:

Select the date and site where you’d like to volunteer.

Contact the Zone Captain to let them know to expect you. This will also help them reach you in case of bad weather if they need to cancel.

Tell your family and friends! More helping hands are always needed!

Ask your Zone Captain for a Liaibility Waiver that every volunteer must sign (parents must sign for those under age 18.)

Dress for the weather and wear old clothes & closed-toe shoes that can get wet and dirty.

Gloves, data cards, and trash bags will be provided.

Thank you for keeping our watersheds clean and healthy!
