Here’s a chance to enter a creative contest and share the wonder of nature with one child or many children!

2012 is the 40th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act. In honor of this milestone, EPA has renamed its annual contest to the “Sense of Water” Contest for 2012.

The Judges are looking for your most artistic expression of a “Sense of Water” through poetry, essay, photography, or dance video. All ages can enter, but you must at least have a team of 2 people from different generations. Here’s the EPA web link with all contest details, rules, and information. There’s also a flyer for Educators to post.

We had a Wake County Winner in 2010 from the Governor Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, NC – 3rd Place in Mixed Media!

Let’s show them that the arts immersed with the sense of water is alive and well in Wake County! Good Luck!

(Raleigh, NC February 10, 2012), USDA NRCS is excited to announce a new smartphone application, or “app,” is available as a free download for both iPhone and Android users to access soil survey information. The app, SoilWeb, combines online soil survey information with the GPS capabilities of smartphones. SoilWeb for the iPhone is a portable version of our online interface to USDA-NRCS digital soil survey data. The application uses the GPS built into the iPhone to acquire your current location, and then submits an HTTP request to our server via the SoilWeb API. A graphical summary of the soils mapped at your current location is presented on-screen, with links to details through our online soil survey, or via the USDA-NRCS official series description (OSD) archive. SoilWeb for the iPhone can be downloaded free of charge from the iPhone App Store.

Find out more information from the USDA here. There’s also a YouTube video about the App.
